Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment: at MFL students learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. We are committed to ensuring that competence and enthusiasm in learning another language enables students to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures: by making comparisons, students gain insight into their own culture and society. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure, and learning to express thoughts and ideas in another language is about learning new ways of thinking, recognising that there are different ways of seeing and interpreting the world, and developing a truly international outlook for a global society.
Our skilled Modern Foreign Languages teachers have lived all over the world and bring their infectious enthusiasm and exceptional subject knowledge to the classroom. The department aims to broaden students’ horizons and encourages them to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries and develop new ways of seeing the world. Our knowledge-rich curriculum is based on important communicative functions, with a strong emphasis on recycling of language, which makes learning accessible, durable and enjoyable and strives to foster a life-long interest in language learning.
